"The Pine Barrens"
A painting in progress of pine stands near where we live. These trees always made me think of the famous and mysterious Pine Barrens on the east coast in southern New Jersey. The way the sunlight disappears into the stand makes me think of the vast forest on the east coast where marauders and bandits lived for decades in colonial America.
A recent oil painting in progress of one of my favorite places to go at Cranbrook in winter when it snows. The duck pond is always interesting after a fresh snowfall especially when the squalls are still blowing through as they were in this scene.

I am an illustrator, a storyteller, and a fine artist. I am happiest when I can be all three at once. I think illustration is a spectrum of storytelling genres and I like to think that each of works of art are little pieces of my own ongoing story. When I ask myself what is illustration today I feel like it is the big question that covers so many ways to create images. Illustration is and always will be about storytelling whether, it overlaps into what most would call fine art or fan art, or it takes the form of graphic novels or editorial work.
